Principais concorrentes Audi Q5, Land Rover Discovery Sport e BMW X3.

ST, which stands for “sports-tuned,” is the performance trim level for Ford vehicles, including the 2020 Ford Edge ST. Is a performance crossover SUV an oxymoron or just what you’re looking for? If it sounds like just what you need, then read on for a way to get your Ford Edge ST and still save money.

The 2020 Ford Edge ST

With its performance 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6, the 2020 Ford Edge ST generates 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. The Edge ST is the only Edge version that has this engine. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes with all-wheel drive. It also features an upgraded suspension and thicker anti-roll bars. Its highest speed is estimated to be about 130 MPH, and it’s also able to tow up to 3,500 lbs too. It is taller for a performance vehicle, but CarBuzz still found it fun to drive.

The five-passenger crossover fits a family and is great to drive as well. The Edge also has a number of standard features. It comes with push-button start, wireless charging, remote start, and a hands-free liftgate. Its 8-inch touchscreen is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It comes standard with Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist features, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control with evasive steering, adaptive LED headlights, and an automatic parking system are available options.

The Edge ST has a few differences to distinguish it from the other trims. It comes standard with 20-inch wheels and has 21-inch wheels available. Lower trims have 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels with a different design. The Edge ST also sports a roof spoiler and dual-exit exhaust with a faux diffuser. In the front, it features a gloss black hexagonal grille plus LED headlights and taillights.

CarBuzz does feel the interior design could use some updates, but the Edge ST is comfortable with bucket seats, heated front seats, ambient lighting, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system all standard. Heating and ventilation in the rear seats is optional. The Edge ST has an Ebony interior. The seats are upholstered with Miko faux suede inserts and leather trimming with City Silver stitching and ST logos below the headrests. It has plenty of cargo room, with 39.2 cubic feet of space.

How the 2020 model is different from the 2019 Edge ST

One way to save some money and get basically the same vehicle is to skip the 2020 Edge ST and go for the 2019 model year. The Edge ST was updated for 2019 and hasn’t been changed much for 2020.

For 2020, it does have a new wheel design and the three new paint colors of Iconic Silver, Rapid Red, and Star White. These colors join Agate Black, Magnetic, and Ford Performance Blue. There were also three colors available for 2019 that have been discontinued: Baltic Sea Green, Stone Gray, and White Gold.

A CD player is no longer offered in the Edge ST for 2020, although it had been in 2019. The 2019 Edge ST did have a recall for a seatbelt issue, while the 2020 Edge ST doesn’t have any recalls so far.

RELATED: The 2020 Ford Edge Has a Surprisingly Luxury Feel

The 2020 Ford Edge ST has a hefty starting price of $43,265, although it does include plenty of standard features. When fully loaded, the 2020 Edge ST is about $52,000. The 2020 base trim starts at $31,100 but doesn’t offer the performance features or engine. According to Consumer Reports, the 2019 Ford Edge now sells for between $21,050 and $33,800. As the top version, the 2019 Edge ST is likely at the top of that range.

The Ford Edge ST offers a fun performance engine and design for buyers who want both a crossover SUV and great driving. An easy way to save some bucks and get nearly the same vehicle is to go for the 2019 Ford Edge ST rather than the 2020 model.

The two-row crossover segment is filled with a competitor roster of vehicles like the Honda Passport, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, and the Ford Edge. However, when most consumers think of crossovers, they’re usually looking for something with enough room for five and all their cargo as well as a relatively decent fuel economy.

It’s not too often that the terms “sporty” and “fast” really cross most people’s minds when shopping for these types of cars unless of course, they happen to be enthusiasts of some sort. For that crowd, there are cars like the Ford Edge ST. And while that’s a very specific trim for a specific buyer, we had to wonder, is it worth buying over the lower trim levels?

2019 Ford Edge | Ford

Since its introduction in 2007, the Ford Edge has long been known for its generous amounts of cargo room and advanced tech features like Ford’s SYNC and MyFord touch. They were advanced at the time, but not without their problems. Over the years, new trim levels came out, including the Ford Edge Sport, which was the same as the regular Ford Edge, but it just included suede interior materials, chrome exhaust tips, and bigger wheels to make look sporty.

An Edgy Ford Edge

Fast forward to 2019 and the new Ford Edge ST was released when Ford decided to ax their Fiesta ST and Focus ST models and wanted to give consumers the dose of sportiness they would now be lacking. The crossover segment has typically done better than the compact car segment, so why not? This new trim level sports a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine that puts out 335 horsepower and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Edge ST comes standard with all-wheel drive and can get to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. That’s definitely no slouch, considering it weighs nearly 4,500 pounds.

On the inside, the Ford Edge ST has nicely bolstered sport seats,  SYNC 3 infotainment on an 8-inch display with Apple Carplay/Android Auto capability, and a B&O premium audio system. It’s a nice play to be, rife with convenient and semi-luxurious accouterments. However, much them can be found on the lower trim levels as well.

Do people like it?

The Ford Edge ST has had mixed reviews since its inception. In their overall review of the Ford Edge, Car and Driver noted that the Ford Edge ST is “an extreme approach to family transport” and then recommended the base SE trim as the one to buy. In CNET’s review of the Ford Edge ST, they stated that the “power figures feel sadly overrated. Drop the hammer from a stop, and you’re tapping your fingers on the steering wheel while you wait for boost to build.” It’s not all bad, though, as they did mention that the Ford Edge is a solid contender in the segment.

Should you buy it?

The 2020 Ford Edge ST carries a price tag of $43,450 (without destination), which is on par with competitors in its class. However, it seems that the Edge ST is trying more to compete with luxury contenders like the Audi SQ5 and Jaguar F-Pace S. And while it’s okay to shoot for the stars, we would recommend aiming to land on the moon and just opting for a lower-trim Ford Edge, or perhaps one of its competitors.
